Comparing Plant Based All-in-One Nutritional Protein Powders!

I know I want a plant based all in one nutritional powder.  I know I want it be packed withprotein and vitamins and I know I want it to taste good.  Yet every time I go into whole foods, I stand in their protein aisle with my eyes glazed as I study the back of the nutritional labels.  After a few minutes of not retaining any information, I jut my hand out for Vega one, throw it into the cart, and book it back to the comfort of the garlicky kale and ginger beets. I’ve attempted to rectify the situation from the sanctity of my desk… but all of my online searches were veggieless (see what I did there.  Like fruit-less).  The market is too saturated… there’s just too many choices, it’s impossible to compare!   So I went on a mission to help the common consumer discern between the good the bad and the ‘tastes like fish food’.  I bought individual packets of 8 of what I thought looked like the most promising brands and scrutinized them across the board.   And this is the results..

Maximize the benefits of your 3 day Juice Cleanse!!

I am not a dietician.  Anyone who is considering a juice cleanse should consult with their doctor.

What started as a fad diet for celebrities has turned into a nationwide phenomenon, with juice bars sprouting up like wildflowers and home juicers flying off the shelves.  And while juicing can promise wonderful health benefits and can jumpstart a healthy lifestyle, it is not for everyone and can even be dangerous if executed incorrectly.

So before you purge your house of solid foods and start choking down green juice, let's discern between who would benefit from a cleanse and who wouldn't.

You should refrain from a juice cleanse if:
-you are diabetic
-you have kidney disease
-you are extremely active
-you are on any heavy medications
-you are under 18
-you are underweight
-you're not willing to give up caffeine and/or alcohol for the 3-5 days of the cleanse

Even if you make my 'do not juice' list, don't fret.  I am simply discouraging you from doing a 3-5 day only juice diet.  I strongly believe that adding juices into your diet is a wonderful way to receive an abundance of essential vitamins for optimal health.  No need to tear up your punch card to Pressed Juicery, I promise!

Pumpkin Peanut and Almond Butter

Today we are making: PUMPKIN NUT BUTTER

Why mixed nut butter?  Because for me it's more satiating than peanut butter... and thus it lasts 3-4 days in my pantry, instead of 1.  Also, each nut delivers it's own particular makeup of vitamins, minerals and healthy fats.

Why pumpkin?  Because it's delicious.  Plus a can of low calorie, high fiber, NO fat pumpkin can help break up the calorie dense nut butter.  (= less guilt about scraping the jar clean).

What you will need:

-1/2 cup of unsalted peanuts
-1 cup mixed nuts, roasted in sea salt
(rich in fiber, magnesium and zinc!)
-1 can of pumpkin puree
(low in calories, high in fiber, great for skin and eye sight)
-1tsp coconut oil
(helps you burn more fat, medicinal properties)
-1 tsp chia seeds
(loaded with antioxidants, fiber and protein. High in omega 3s!)
-1 tsp flax seeds
(high in fiber, b vitamins and omega 3s)
-1 tsp cinnamon
(can lower the negative impact of ingestion a high fat meal)
-1/2 tsp nutmeg
       (aids in indigestion relief)
-5 drops of stevia, 1 stevia packet
-1 tsp of agave or honey (more to taste)
- sea salt to taste
(contains minerals and electrolytes that help you stay hydrated and aid in digestion)

Now What:
Put all ingredients in a high power food processor and puree for 5 minutes, stopping to scrape sides. Move contents to mason jar and enjoy!

Baked Cinnamon Apple Chips

An apple a day keeps your waist whittling away ...if you ask me.   But for some reason you can't replace the crunch of your cape cod salt and vinegar chips with the crunch of a jazz apple.  I get it.  And I'm here to help.

BAKED CINNAMON APPLE CHIPS
1. preheat oven to 250 degrees.

2. cut off the top and bottom of a red apple and discard.  Slice apple into thin pieces using a knife or a mandoline.

3. Mix 2 tsp cinnamon with 1/2 tsp nutmeg.  Dip both sides of the apple slices into the spice mix and lay evenly on greased cookie tray or parchment paper.  Optional toppings: sugar, coconut oil, cranberries.

4.  Bake for 1 hour or when the apple slices have begun to curl up on the sides.  Use spatula to transfer chips to a cooling wrack.  Let cool for 20 minutes or until crispy.

Eggplant and Zuchhini Rollatinis - Healthy!

There's nothing better than returning home to Halifax, MA in August - when the garden is over plentiful and everyone has exasperated their imagination with how to eat the baskets and baskets of fresh vegetables.  This recipe I am especially proud of - a healthy and flavorful twist on an old favorite - stuffed shells.

Eggplant and Zucchini Rollatinis

Ingredients:
2 zucchini

Healthy is the New Skinny

The beat drops and I pound my legs forward, hovering over the seat, making perfect circles in sync with the song.  My heart is thumping aggressively against my heaving chest, but I take a deep breath and muster up my last ounce of strength to power forward to the finish line.  I am cognitive of the other bikers, the sweat dripping in my eyes, the instructor's encouraging words, and the rhythmic motion of my hips, swaying slightly back and forth as I trudge on.  And in this moment, I feel thankful.

Like most women, I have a love/hate relationship with my body.  Erring much more regularly towards hate.  Just today, I cleaned out a jar of peanut butter.. then sat in self loathing while I polished off garlic dip.  Okay, I get it.. I'm crazy.  I don't eat bread, haven't had a chip or french fry in over a year, wouldn't dream of letting fast food or soda touch my lips... and the list goes on.  But I've got vices.  A sweet tooth for one.  And a real problem with severely overeating foods I deem 'healthy'.  Nuts, seeds, fruit and vegetables... oils and 'good fats', dark chocolate, coffee, wine... you name it.  I

Watermelon Juice

Not my most impressive recipe.  But definitely one of my favorites.  This juice is so refreshing and perfect on a summer day.

Ingredients:
2 cups watermelon chunks, refrigerated
1/2 a Lemon OR lime, squeezed
A heap of Fresh Mint

Instructions:
Blend. And enjoy :)

If you're in an August heatwave and the idea of even using the blender seems too strenuous... freeze the watermelon chunks first.   If you have mango or strawberries or any other delicious fruit - you can always throw those in, but this really is delightful by itself.

Chia Seed Pudding

Let's talk chia seeds. These mysterious little delights are packed with antioxidants, high in fiber and deliver a good source of magnesium, calcium and omega 3 fatty acids.  Not to mention, one serving has 4 grams of protein.  I am not a nutritionalist, but I can say with confidence that chia seeds are your diet friend if you're looking to slim down.   Throw some onto your salad, in your smoothie... OR make:

CHIA SEED PUDDING:

1 cup almond milk
3 tsp chia seeds
1 tsp cinnamon

Add ingredients to a sealed Tupperware container and shake vigorously. Refrigerate overnight (preferably for 2 nights). The chia seeds will expand in the mixture.

**Optional add in for thickness, protein and nutrients: 1/2 scoop vega chocolate plant based protein powder.

To get the chocolate flavor without vega protein, add unsweetened cocoa powder or use chocolate flavored almond milk.

Sub almond milk for kefir to increase probiotic intake and make the pudding a bit thicker.

Watermelon Feta and Mint Appetizer Bites

For being so quick, healthy, easy, delicious and inexpensive to make.. guests are always impressed with these light and refreshing bites.

-1 block of feta, cut in 1/2 by 1/2 inch cubes

Using a toothpick pierce the watermelon and feta then put 1 mint lead (folded in half depending on size) on top. Drizzle with balsamic once all of the bites are arranged on the serving platter.

Banana & Egg White Pancake Recipe

On my relentless quest to maintain the thigh gap, my diet generally consists of egg whites, fruit, vegetables, chicken, fish, nuts and seeds.

I had been curious to try banana and egg white pancakes for some time -- but I knew what would happen.  I would make them, then cover them in syrup.  At 28 grams of sugar per serving, even the grade A Vermont maple syrup won't be worth the guilt I'll feel.  And really, who has one serving of syrup? And is it even legal to have pancakes without butter?

Last week, these pressing questions were answered when I discovered sugar free syrup in the cabinet. It exists?!  Later, after reading the ingredients, I decided to make my own sugar free syrup that I could trust wasn't made of genetically modified poison, which I will share with you at the bottom of this post.  But for now - the Smuckers sugar free syrup is delicious!! And tastes just like the real thing!

Healthy Pumpkin Soup!

(AS POSTED FOR CARE-PILOT 11/2013)

Healthy Pumpkin Soup

Let's talk pumpkin, shall we?  This fall favorite packs a significant source of vitamin A and is high in fiber.  A serving of pumpkin contains over 3 grams of iron, which keeps our immune systems running properly and helps us stay cold-free.  Furthermore, the nutrients that give the vegetable it's beautiful orange hue have been suggested to protect us from developing lung cancer, prevent heart disease, and reduce inflammation.  Pumpkin packs a punch!

With temperatures dropping, I thought what better way to incorporate more pumpkin into my diet than with a delicious and nutritious pumpkin soup!  Now I used a crockpot, but the recipe can be made just the same in a stovetop pan under medium-low heat!

Hope you enjoy this recipe, I know your body will!

Chelsea's Healthy Pumpkin Soup

What you'll need:

-2 pie pumpkins, or 2 cans of pumpkin puree
-1 cup apple cider or apple juice

Beat the Holiday Stress!

BEAT THE HOLIDAY STRESS! (PUBLISHED AT CAREPILOT.COM NOVEMBER 2013)

From watching a loved one open a thoughtful present to decorating every corner of my home, the holidays still awash me with a magical joy.  While this feeling does brings me back to my childhood, the merriment isn't quite the same.  And no, it is not because I discovered Santa's secret.  It is because the holidays are now clouded with a heavy stress.

Will I be able to buy everyone presents?  Are my presents good enough? How can I find the time to throw this holiday party?  Will my kids be disappointed?  How come I can't just stop after one cookie?

...and, unfortunately, the list goes on.  Even for a deck-the-halls diehard like myself, the holiday stress can be suffocating.  But not this year.  I've devised a fool proof plan to keep our merriment high and our stress levels low this season!

1. Gift Giving.  Contrary to what the department stores want us to believe, the emphasis does not have to be on buying the most lavish presents for your loved ones.  Start with a budget, and then stick to it.

The BEST Healthy Apple Crisp

(PUBLISHED ON CAREPILOT.COM, NOVEMBER 2013)

The age old saying "An Apple A Day Keeps the Doctor Away" holds quite a bit of truth.  Not only are apples rich with antioxidants, they also provide an impressive amount of fiber.  This perfect handheld snack carries Vitamin C, b complex vitamins that keep the nervous system functioning properly, and phytonutrients to help protect the body from the effects of free radicals.  As if that wasn't enough, apples are also rich in calcium, potassium and phosphorus!

Apples are a great snack year round, but is there is nothing more quintessential for fall than apple picking.  I thoroughly enjoy dragging in an overflowing bag of hand picked apples, but there are only so many apples I can snack on each day before my prized fruit starts to go bad.   Most will turn to

Healthy Chicken Piccata

Chicken is a staple for dieters looking to trim down and tone up.  But there is only so many nights we can grill chicken and serve it with steamed vegetables before we turn to pizza and pasta out of boredom.

So this week I took one of my favorite chicken dishes, chicken piccata and tweeked it into the most healthy version I could.

Chicken piccata is simple. A lemon and caper sauce over pan fried chicken.  And what better way to jazz up chicken then with lemon.   Lemons aid in keeping your immune system in top shape, help cleanse the liver, and are packed with vitamin C, citric acid and magnesium!

So throw on the apron, pull out the fancy plates and get ready to impress with my quick, easy, and healthy chicken piccata recipe.

What you will need:

INGREDIENTS
-chicken breasts (1 breast per person)
-whole wheat flour

Staying On Track during ... COOKOUT SEASON!

PUBLISHED FOR CAREPILOT.COM BLOG (AUGUST 2013)

Greetings from day 10 at my family’s home in Plymouth, MA! While I love visiting my favorite little speck on the map more than anything, the trip really tests my willpower and inevitably expands my waistline in the most undesirable ways.
Each morning, I wake up to chocolate chip pancakes, eggs benedict, bacon and cheese danishes I grew up begging for. Lunch and dinners are heavy meals of lasagnas, meatloaves and steaks, followed by an irresistible homemade dessert. I am sure you all can sympathize in one-way or another. It is August, and cookouts, family reunions and weddings are rampant.
Here are some tips to stay sane and only gain a pound or two when you are up against visiting family, a wedding weekend, a long vacation, or just wrapped up in the enjoyment of cookout season.
1. Wake up with good intentions. Start your morning routine with a cup of coffee or tea and assess your will power. Don’t focus on guilt trips from the feast you enjoyed the night before. But rather, reflect on the enjoyable, but heavy, meal and make a conscious effort to be mindful of what you will consume today.
2. Fill up with a sustainable breakfast. Doing so will help keep you full and away from the cookies and sweets until lunchtime. It is okay to indulge a little, but try not to overdo it. One pancake and a slice of bacon is enough. Have a sliced banana with a little bit of peanut butter with your meal and you are bound to feel more satisfied and less likely to reach for a second cinnamon bun.
3. Try to only indulge in the things you cannot get everyday. The grocery store cupcakes are always going to taste the same. And so is the pub cheese and the hot dogs. Choose to fill up on your great aunt’s famous apple crisp or your sister’s first attempt at a fancy potato salad.
4. Really eyeball the food options before digging in. This is one of my favorite calorie saving rules! Don’t just choose the foods you normally deny yourself of because you think this is your one free day to be a glutton. Fill one plate with the dishes you think you will most enjoy. This rule is especially important with the desserts. You do not need a separate plate to try each dessert. Chose one or two that look undeniably delicious and pick a small piece to enjoy.
5. The 50:50 Ratio. When making my plate, I like to give myself at least a 50:50 ratio of healthy to unhealthy foods. That means half my plate will be vegetable dishes, less fattening dips (such as hummus, guacamole, salsa or yogurt based dips), lean meats and salads.
6. Be conscious of alcohol consumption. Excessive alcohol can lower our inhibitions and leave us less will power to stay away from the buffalo chicken dip. Plus, a full day of drinking can quickly triple our daily calorie, carb and sugar intake! For mixed cocktails, I try to stick to wine coolers or sangrias made with soda water and fresh fruit. Rum punches and margaritas will spike your sugar and tack on a few hundred calories per serving. Wine, champagne, beers and unflavored liquor mixed with soda water or tonic is your safest bet if you are planning on having a few cocktails over the course of the party.
7. Get some exercise! Play croquet or horseshoes with the family, get up on the dance floor at the wedding, go for a walk around the block, or hop in the pool with the kids! There are always plenty of chances to burn a few calories and step away from the buffet line.
All of these suggestions are useful tactics for sticking to our diet goals, but they are just that: suggestions, NOT rules!
The only rule I have is to live joyfully in the moment. If I am going to have another piece of my mom’s homemade lasagna that brings me back to my childhood, then I am going to savor every single delicious bite. Our social lives revolve around enjoying meals in good company. Dieting does not mean giving up this social life, it just means being conscious and fully aware of our eating habits and actions.
Do not feel guilty for a day (or in my case 10 days!) of veering off track. We are in this together, and with a little extra motivation at the gym on Monday, we will be back on the road to fit and healthy in no time.
Enjoy your time with family and friends!

Label GMOS!

Before yesterday, I had always advocated for choosing organic if the option is available.  But as we all know, organic can be scarce in restaurants and our local grocers, and when it is available, organic is usually synonymous with expensive.

At the Awareness Film Festival in Santa Monica, I sat in on the documentary "Genetic Roulette."   The films purpose is to educate viewers on the dangers of ingesting chemically altered foods, and highlights all of the research that links GMO ingestion with the rise in children's food allergies, cancer, sickly and irritable livestock, infertility, and even the rise in autism.  With all research, nothing should be taken without a grain of (organic) salt.  The research does not prove that eating GMO foods causes any medical problems, but it does show that the two correlate.  The statistics with livestock fed GMO diets versus livestock eating non GMO feed is astounding.  And many health problems in children through adults have been cleared up from simply switching to non GMO diets. The funding for research against genetically modified foods and the publication advocating for their abolishment is scarce.  I could write another article on the corruption of Monsanto Company, but here is not the place nor the time.  Just know that there is quite a bit of money working to punish and suppress anyone who stands up against GMO foods.

Whether or not genetically modified foods cause cancers, infertility, and all of the other claims, I believe the lesson here is much simpler.  Know what you are putting into your body, and the bodies of your family.  I urge you to search for and pay the extra for organic, to read labels carefully, to push for labeling of GMO foods.  Reach for raw fruits, nuts and vegetables, unprocessed meats and fresh fish.  I promise to provide you with plentiful healthy recipes that taste delicious and use no processed or packaged ingredient that are so far from their derivatives they don't even bare a resemblance.

When your skin starts to glow, your hair shines, you are less irritable and you feel more energized, you'll thank me!  Until then, do a little research and spread the word.  Let's Label GMO!

Los Angeles Hiking: The Santa Anita Canyon Loop (Arcadia)

What a perfect hiking spot!

The drive to Arcadia took an hour and change but the last leg up the winding mountaintop was absolutely breathtaking. The rolling hills and deep ravines reminded me of a forested Grand Canyon.

PARKING.
There is absolutely no adequate parking. Ever. But drive to the convenience store and purchase your 5 dollar parking pass then pray for someone to leave. Worst comes to worst begin driving back down and park along the winding road. Don't be overwhelmed by the number of parked cars, the trail is wide enough to accommodate all of these hikers!

THE TRAIL.
The trail begins on pavement for nearly the first mile.  You will see a marker to go right towards a dirt path.  Don't be tricked, keep on the pavement towards 'Sturtevant Falls'. This is the 50 foot waterfall you came to see - and the hike will only rack you up 3 miles and change, but there are plenty of add on trails that can bring you closer to a 10 mile hike. The trail will switch off pavement after the initial descent and you'll follow the streaming river to the beautiful waterfall and pool.

The trek down is fairly easy, but don't forget you have to come back up at some point.  The add on hikes can be much more steep if you need the extra challenge.  While there are plenty of additional trails located near the waterfall, a nice option is to hike back up the paved trail and decide at the top if you would like to add on the dirt path I mentioned earlier.  This trail will bring you down to a small pool perfect for taking a dip or enjoying a picnic and adds on another 2 miles.

DOG FRIENDLY.  They should be on the leash, but I left the Golden off-leash and no one seemed to mind (aside from when he shook himself dry next to a picnic-ing family)

CAMPING.  There are cabins doting the trail, which can be rented out for camping.  Seems a little to Blair Witch Project for me, but might be nice for a big group to rent a few adjacent campsites.

The Evo-Inc Cleanse: Review

As I previously posted, I decided to commit to a 14 day total body cleanse.  7 days of fasting 7 of eating raw/vegan/gluten free.  Annnnd while it took me closer to three weeks, today is the last day!

DAY 1: The first day of drinking the master cleanse juice was miserable.  It was a Saturday, I was starving and out of my mind bored.  Matt and I drove in circles trying to find something to do other than drink or go to brunch.

DAY 2: And Sunday wasn't much better... I felt depleted of energy, ready to give up, and extremely irritable.  It didn't help that I had quite a lot of shopping to do and my companion was throwing back candy like it was going out of style.

DAY 3-7: But Sunday folded into Monday and I woke up feeling energized, slimmer and overall pleased with my decision to keep fasting.  The week flew by, and it was a breeze staying clear of food and drinks. My only complaint is that my body stopped heating itself appropriately, so I was miserably cold in 70 degree weather.

DAY 7-9: Now according to the plan (which I posted a in-depth summary of a few posts back), I was supposed to introduce solids very slowly back into my diet on the second Saturday.   This just happen to be the same Saturday I was at my first coachella weekend, so needless to say I had a few mishaps.  I definitely drank, but at least I stayed to the raw/vegan/gluten free guidelines (right?!)

DAY 10-14: We discovered Erewhon, so basically we ate like Vegan kings for this entire week.  Not drinking was tough with friends in town, but eating was a cinch.  Fruit for breakfast, raw zucchini 'pasta' for lunch, trail mix snacks and raw vegan tacos, salads, soups and quinoa for dinner.

This was the point where I was supposed to do the dreaded epsom salt chugging followed by drinking a half cup of olive oil --- but with Vegas coming up on the 15th, I decided to postpone one more week....

Day 15-17: Drank like a fish, but miraculously stuck to the diet!  Lots of nuts, lots of fruits and a few salads thrown in the mix.  Definitely hard to turn down In n Out for the ride home, but I persevered!

Day 18-21: Back to eating clean until last night.  When I did the epsom salt/extra virgin olive oil death cleanse.

Conclusions:  I've never felt so empowered as I did the first week. Food is such a clutch for me, and no matter how full I am... I become a ravenous animal when I get home from a stressful day of work.  And even worse at night while I mindlessly munch.  Okay, I basically mindlessly eat nonstop from waking up to falling asleep.  Not eating left me feeling in control of my body and will power.  Plus abstaining from coffee alcohol (kind of) and gum was a huge feat for me.

I feel guilty for frivolous weekend festivities, but the cleanse isn't meant to torture you right?  If I've got the concept right, the program is meant to enliven you and give your body and mind a peaceful vacation.  Not sure if my body had a vacation per se, but the empowerment of the first week hasn't quite worn off and I've lost 5 or so pounds off my middle.  (My boyfriend even shed 20!)  Did my gallbladder stones flush out of my system? Who knows.  Is this actually cleansing my system or just throwing it into shock?  Also not sure.   What I do know is that I feel a little more alive, and a little more guided on my relentless pursuit of health and wellness.

14 DAY CLEANSE courtesy of Evolution-Inc !

I've been blessed with skinny genes. I come from a line of slenders and while ill never have breasts over a b cup (at best), it would be really hard for me to eat enough to actually be fat.

This past few months tho, my blessing has felt much more like a curse. I used to eat well and exercise for two days to lose my pouch ...now it seems like everything is just getting puffier and well, fatter, no matter how many hours I log at the gym.

Let me spell out my normal habits. I work out 6 times a week. High intensity boot camp, weight training, kick boxing, cycling, yoga ..you name it. I have a protein shake and a banana for breakfast, apples and oranges for snacks, a salad or grilled veg for lunch then I usually just snack on veggies and nuts for dinner with the occasional meal out of fish or chicken. And always a glass or 2 of wine. I don't eat carbs. Rarely eat dairy and say no to sweets 9 out of 10 times. This lifestyle has kept me at a happy 104-109 my whole life until now.  I blame it whole-heartedly on the overwhelming stress of my job, but quitting is never the answer.  So I turned to Evo-Inc's plan.

Here's a small breakdown of the 14 day EVO-INC cleanse: (http://evo-inc.com/)

Night before Day 1
: drink one 10 oz bottle of magnesium citrate before bed and get 8 hours of sleep.
Day 1-7: drink 1 gallon of Evo Alkalizer Mix throughout the day, each day.  also drink 6-8 oz of distilled water per day, each day. Take 30 supplements daily (whole body, liver, kidney and colon) and two liquid aligns for galbladder and liver.

(EVO ALKALIZER MIX - 1 gallon ditilled water, juice of 6 medium limes, 1.5-2 cups B grade maple syrup, 1 tbs cayenne pepper)

Day 8: Continue supplements, add liquid foods
Day 9 & 10: Continue supplements, add solids

Day 11-12: add ortho phos mix

ortho phos mix:
1/2 bottle of otho phos
1 quart raw unfiltered apple juice
Day 13: Day of the flush
6:00PM: take one teaspoon Epsom Salts dissolved in 3/4 cup warm water (you can follow with four ounces of fresh squeezed lemon, lime or grapefruit juice).
8:00PM: repeat Epsom salt
10:00PM: Blend 1/2 cup warm unrefined virgin olive oil and 3/4 cup lemon, lime or grapefruit juice. Drink it all and immediately go to bed and lie on your right side for 30 minutes.  then you may lie on your back if you wish. Do not get up. go to sleep.
Day 14: Eliminate taking all supplements
6:00AM - repeat Epsom Salt
8:00 AM - repeat Epsom Salt
10:00AM - you may eat watermelon or berries.  Eat a light lunch and normal dinner.

***Week two you only eat vegan, organic, raw and gluten free!

FOOD TO AVOID DURING WEEK TWO:
-vinegar
-gluten
-dairy products
-fermented foods
-caffeine
-all oils should be greatly reduced
-breads

-meat and meat products
-alcohol
-processed foods
